Illnesses to Expect

When your children start getting to the age where they’re exploring new things and feeling out their environments, they can, unfortunately, get sick. But no need to worry; there are a handful of common childhood illnesses that your little one may run into at some point in their lives. Read below for a list of illnesses your child may develop and how an El Paso pediatric doctor may treat it.

  • Sore Throat- Sore throats caused by a virus can’t be treated with antibiotics and will usually disappear within 7-10 days.
  • Ear Pain- Ear pain has many causes, like teething, ear infection, swimmer’s ear, or a cold. Amoxicillin is a common antibiotic to treat ear pain.
  • Cough- Similar to a sore throat, if your child’s cough is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not often needed. Pediatric doctors in El Paso advise that cough medicine should not be used on children who are younger than four years old as it can have serious side effects.
  • Common Cold- Many young children can get anywhere between 6-8 colds a year, lasting around 10 days. Depending on the virus will depend on what kind of antibiotic your pediatric doctor will recommend.
  • Bacterial Sinusitis- This is suspected if cold-like symptoms last longer than 10 days. Antibiotics are prescribed by an El Paso pediatric doctor if the symptoms are accompanied by a fever or a thick, yellow discharge.
  • Bronchiolitis- This is common in infants and young children during flu season. Your pediatric doctor will give recommendations to help make your child feel more comfortable while they fight the virus.
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)- UTIs can occur from the infant stage to the adult stage. They are treated based on the type of bacteria that is found in the urine.
